Improved Communication
(A Workshop Based on the DISC Pesonality Styles)

Overview

Success at work and happiness in life depend in large measure on how well we communicate with others.

We tend to communicate with others – verbally and nonverbally – in the way we would like other people to communicate with us. But we’re forgetting one of the most basic facts of life: people are different.

We are much more effective — and successful — when we treat others as they would like to be treated. To do so, we have to understand our own preferred way of doing things and other people’s ways of doing things. Then we can adjust our behaviors — what we say and do — to build rapport, understanding, and cooperation.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will improve their communication skills in a way that will benefit teamwork, morale, and customer service. They will be able to:

  1. Understand their personal behavioral style and how it affects the way they typically communicate with others.

  2. Recognize, understand, and appreciate other people’s communication styles.

  3. Adapt the way they communicate to build understanding and cooperation.

Workshop Description

This workshop involves people in a highly interactive process of self-discovery and insight.

Participants begin by identifying their own patterns. They recognize and explore ways they prefer to act, relate, work, socialize, and deal with change, as well as the ways they prefer to be approached, consulted, and involved in a group process. They are able to name their strengths and the ways they contribute to the success of a team or a company. They are also able to admit their limitations in a way that doesn’t make them feel at all deficient. This recognition process often elicits a lot of aha’s and laughter.

Participants then understand how to recognize other people’s patterns, their strengths and limitations, and how to work more effectively with them.

By the end of the workshop participants have a clearer understanding of how they can reduce conflict and miscommunication, build rapport and cooperation, work on teams more efficiently, cope with change more positively, and profit from working with people they used to avoid.

The workshop is designed for a half- or full-day format. (The amount and type of interaction, group exercises, and objectives change, depending on the timeframe.)

Participants show an immediate improvement in the way they work with others, and they gain access to resources they can use to continue their development.

Workshop Materials

Participants complete an on-line assessment prior to the event. (The assessment takes less than 10 minutes to fill out.) They will then receive a 20-page, detailed description of their behavioral style.
