Using DISC to Improve Communication, Teamwork, and Motivation
DISC Workshop Summary:
Understanding people’s behavioral styles is the key to improving communications, teamwork, and motivation.
People tend to treat others (to speak, socialize, interact, work, and even joke with them) in the way they, themselves, prefer to be treated. But people are different. And what works with some people shuts other people off.
We are more effective—and successful—when we treat others as they prefer to be treated. To do so, we have to understand our own preferred way of doing things (our behavioral style) and other people’s ways of doing things (their styles). Then we can adjust our behavior—what we say and do—to improve communication, teamwork, and motivation.
The DISC Behavioral Model describes four basic patterns: not types of people, but styles of behaving:
There is no right or wrong, no better or worse, behavioral style.
Each has its unique strengths and limitations.
D (for Dominance)
— direct, decisive, results oriented
I (for Influence)
— outgoing, big picture, energizing
S (for Steadiness)
— stable, steady, systematic, diplomatic
C (for Compliance)
— correct, controlled, detail oriented
The behavioral patterns of one style tend to conflict with those of the other three styles, making it easier to get along with people of the same style. But the behavioral patterns of one style can complement those of the other three styles, making it more advantageous to work with people of a different style.
That is the power of a DISC Workshop: it allows people to recognize each other’s differences and to use those differences to their mutual advantage. Miscommunications get resolved. Conflicts get productively addressed and resolved. And people become more motivated.
DISC Workshop Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand their personal behavioral style and how it affects the way they prefer to relate, communicate, motivate, and work with others.
- Recognize, understand, and appreciate other people’s behavioral styles.
- Adapt their behavior to improve their interactions with colleagues, clients, and customers—even with people they previously avoided or called “difficult.”
- Work more effectively in teams or groups, using people’s differences as an asset, not a source of conflict.
- Motivate people by understanding what they want and value.
DISC Workshop Description:
This workshop involves people in a highly interactive process of self-discovery and insight. People recognize themselves and others as the behavioral patterns are described. And they discover a way of talking about differences in a positive, non-judgmental way.
Participants complete an on-line assessment prior to the event.
(The assessment takes less than 10 minutes to fill out.) They
then receive a 20-plus page description of their personal
During the workshop, participants learn more about their own patterns. They
recognize and explore ways they prefer to act, relate, work,
socialize, and deal with change, as well as the ways they prefer
to be approached, consulted, and involved in a group process.
Participants then learn how to recognize other people’s patterns, their strengths and limitations, and how to work more effectively with them.
By the end of the workshop participants have a clearer understanding of how they can reduce conflict and miscommunication, build rapport and cooperation, work on teams more efficiently, cope with change more positively, and profit from working with people they used to avoid.

Teams of any sort, sales representatives, customer service representatives, and managers
will all benefit from this DISC Workshop. Leaders who want to
motivate their people more effective will also profit from it.
- Half-Day Workshop: This program can be delivered as a stand-alone workshop, or integrated into a longer program (as part of a team-building retreat, for example)
- Breakout Session: The basic information can be presented in
a 1 ˝ hour session. Although participants will not get the
detailed report, they will create their own behavioral style
